Coffee Tables.
The most overlooked piece of furniture in your living room. You spend hours choosing your style and fabric for your sofa and chairs. You search Pinterest boards, google trends and shop local decor stores to get the perfect drapes, artwork and area rug. The coffee table, well, it’s like the quiet, shy middle child with very loud, rambunctious older and younger siblings. You know that they are there, but they don't draw a lot of attention to themselves.
We are seeing emerging trends, where focus is being played on not only style but the functionality of the pieces that are chosen for the space. What do you want the room to say about you? What do you want your family and guest to feel and do when they are in the space? Yes, a lot to consider.
A coffee table to me is the icing on the cake, the lemon wedge anchored on my glass of ice tea, the shot of perfume as I leave for the day. It. Completes. Me. (Ha sorry got a little Jerry McGuire there). I mean the living room. The coffee table is the anchor. Replacing it or rethinking its accessories is one of the easiest ways to change the look of your room.
I bet 99% of all households have one, in various shapes and styles. I am not sure what you 1% put your coffee down onto? What do you rest your feet on? Have you all gone mad? Argh. Let's move on to the 99% of us.
So you have a coffee table. Maybe now you are thinking you might have made a bad choice, or that Tracy Struthers is right, and it has been overlooked. Have no fear.
If your table is wood and is great shape, sometimes a coat of paint will add life back to it. When we bought our home, all I wanted was a round coffee table. I searched online, and stores and didn't find one I liked. I went to our local marketplace online and I found it. The loveliest older woman was selling this dark wood round coffee table – as they were moving to a retirement home. I bought it for $50, brought it home, painted it a gorgeous white, and I still have it to this day, 8 years later. It is my favorite piece of furniture in my home. Hands down. You don’t need to spend a fortune to have beauty.
As a decorator and homeowner, displaying pieces that complement the space and creates the story of the home, is so easily done with simple ideas and tricks. So go walk into your living room, take a good look at your coffee table, and let’s get crazy. Is it time for a fresh coat of paint or complete replacement? Or is the table great, but just needs some accessories? Let’s dress her up, and make her the gorgeous centerpiece of your home she was meant to me. (To me coffee tables are girls).
Flowers, books, baskets, plants, candles, ceramic balls, mirror trays, widgets, there are so many options. Stay with me here, this will be fun. The accessories I use for all three video examples can either be found around your home or at any local decor shop – in some variation. I want to inspire you to put some thought into the pieces you choose. I promise you, with my ideas and some creativity, you will LOVE how it pulls your room together.
In this video, I will be demonstrating 3 different themes on my $50 table, to dress up your coffee table.
I hope I have given you a bit of inspiration to create a space you will love. Most importantly, just have fun decorating.
3 things I know for sure:
1). You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have beauty in your home.
2). A small can of paint can make an old table look stunning again.
3). Be selective and use just a couple of pieces for your accessories. Less is more.
Until next week.
Live simple, love your space
